Artist’s Statement:
Mount Rushmore had been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember. After seeing it in countless movies growing up, it felt almost surreal to finally stand before it in person. I visited last fall with my boyfriend and my dog as part of an unforgettable road trip, and it truly lived up to everything I had imagined.
This piece was a unique challenge for me. I don’t often draw people, and capturing faces—especially ones as recognizable as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln—pushed me in new ways as an artist. Every line and shadow had to feel just right to honor both the likeness and the monument itself.
I ended up creating two versions of this artwork—one set during the daytime, highlighting the natural tones and textures of the granite, and another at night, where I could explore a more dramatic and atmospheric interpretation. Each version captures a completely different mood, reflecting how the same place can feel entirely transformed depending on the light and time of day.
Through this artwork, I wanted to capture not just the scale of Mount Rushmore, but the feeling of finally witnessing something you’ve dreamed about for years. It’s about that moment when expectation meets reality—and somehow, reality is even better.
