Some ski runs become memorable not because they’re the steepest or the hardest, but because they’re the ones that help you fall in love with the mountain.

Stevens Pass is one of Washington’s most iconic ski areas, surrounded by deep snow, towering evergreens, and the dramatic scenery of the Cascades. While the mountain is known for plenty of legendary black-diamond terrain, I spent my day exploring the blue runs — and Skyline Express quickly became one of my favorites.

I only started snowboarding two seasons ago, so I’m still building confidence and working my way up through the mountain. Skyline Express gave me exactly what I love about snowboarding right now: beautiful scenery, enough challenge to keep things exciting, and the kind of run you immediately want to ride again.

Stevens Pass is somewhere I’ve personally visited before bringing it home to draw. Staying true to my rule that if I haven’t been there, I don’t draw it, I wanted this piece to capture my own experience of the mountain rather than simply choosing the most famous or difficult terrain.

The original artwork was created by hand on my iPad using my Apple Pen, with dozens of hours spent building the snow, evergreens, chairlift, cables, shadows, and layered blue tones that give the scene its crisp winter atmosphere.
