There are some places on the Washington coast that feel almost otherworldly.

Second Beach, just outside La Push on the Olympic Peninsula, is one of them — a rugged stretch of Pacific coastline filled with towering sea stacks, enormous pieces of driftwood, dense coastal forest, and the kind of wild scenery that makes you stop and take everything in.

Second Beach is somewhere I’ve personally visited before bringing it home to draw. Reaching the beach means following a beautiful forested trail before suddenly emerging onto the open coastline, and I wanted this artwork to capture that feeling of discovering such a dramatic and unforgettable place.

The original artwork was created by hand on my iPad using my Apple Pen, with hours spent building the individual details, textures, colors, shoreline, forest, and distinctive rock formations that make this part of Washington so recognizable.

For Twilight fans, this stretch of coastline also has an extra connection. Second Beach sits near La Push, the real-life Washington community that plays an important role in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight saga and is closely associated with Jacob Black and the Quileute characters. While the movie’s famous La Push beach scenes were filmed elsewhere, visiting the real La Push coastline gives you a glimpse into the landscape and atmosphere behind the world of the books.
