Tucquala Lake — Fish Lake, Washington

Some places feel special because they’re famous. Others feel special because they’re yours.

There are several places called Fish Lake throughout Washington, but this is my local Fish Lake — Tucquala Lake, tucked into the mountains beyond Cle Elum near the Salmon La Sac area. The name Tucquala is often translated as “fish lake,” which makes the connection between the two names especially fitting.

I chose this particular viewpoint because of one of the lake’s most recognizable little details: the distinctive S-shaped channel winding through the grasses. The reason no grass grows through that section is because that’s where the current flows, creating a natural pathway through the lake. It’s one of those small features that makes the landscape instantly recognizable when you know the area.

Surrounded by mountain ridges, evergreen forest, tall grasses, and bright blue water, Tucquala Lake feels peaceful, wild, and wonderfully removed from everything.

Like every location in my collection, this is somewhere I’ve personally visited before bringing it home to draw. The original artwork was created by hand on my iPad using my Apple Pencil, with dozens of hours spent carefully building the mountains, trees, grasses, water, and that winding S-shaped current that makes this view so special.
